GTA 6 is 73 days away, and I've already watched the Extended Look an embarrassing number of times.

Eleven days ago Rockstar dropped "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look" โ€” captured entirely in-game on a regular PS5 โ€” and it premiered on Netflix before YouTube, which is honestly the most 2026 sentence I've typed. If you missed it: it looks absurd. But first, the scoreboard, because the numbers on this game stopped being normal a long time ago. The first trailer broke YouTube's 24-hour record with over 90 million views. The second trailer did roughly 69 million in a day, and Rockstar claims nearly half a billion views across platforms. GTA V has sold over 200 million copies and still charts, twelve years later. This isn't a game release anymore โ€” it's a weather event.

How we got here (the delay lore)

Fall 2025 became May 26, 2026, which became November 19, 2026. Two delays, zero explanations beyond "polish," and a fanbase that now treats every Take-Two earnings call like a hostage negotiation. The good news: the May earnings call confirmed the date holds, pre-orders opened June 25 ($79.99 standard, $99.99 Ultimate), and preloading starts November 12. The bad news for PC players: you're waiting again. History says late 2027 at best โ€” GTA V took 18 months to reach PC, Red Dead 2 took 13.

Lucia and Jason, your local Bonnie and Clyde

The setup from trailer 2: Lucia gets out of prison, Jason's fixing roofs and driving around Vice City, and the two of them try the honest life for about five minutes before the crime spree starts. Dual protagonists in love โ€” a first for the series โ€” set across Leonida, the GTA-verse Florida, with Vice City back for the first time since 2006. It's also Rockstar's first female lead, which somehow took 25 years, but here we are.

Lucia's first scene back in the free world. The orange jumpsuit is doing a lot of storytelling here.

What the Extended Look actually showed

Proper in-game footage, no smoke and mirrors: sunset beach bars, airboat chases through the harbor, a highway pile-up that ends with a cop car doing cartwheels, and a nightclub scene with more NPCs than some entire games. The density is the point โ€” Leonida is built to be lived in, not just driven through.

Airboat vs. cargo ship vs. everybody. The harbor alone looks bigger than most open worlds.

Theories, because that's the law now

Map nerds are measuring pixels again, and the early math says Leonida dwarfs GTA V's map โ€” Rockstar hasn't confirmed a size, so season your hopes. Online plans are unconfirmed: single-player ships November 19, and whatever follows GTA Online is strongly implied but Rockstar's never called it "GTA Online 2." And with a marketing push confirmed for this month, trailer three could land any Tuesday. I'm refreshing like it's 2023.

Early hype rating: 9/10

No spoilers โ€” it isn't out. But everything I've seen points to the biggest launch in gaming history, and the Extended Look didn't show a single thing that looked risky. One point docked for the PC wait and the small chance Rockstar moves the date again, in which case I will simply evaporate. See you in Vice City on November 19.
